Diet and Decay
Even though kids love sugar, as their parent it is up to you to limit how frequently they consume them. Importantly it is the frequency of the sugar consumption that is the crucial factor in the progression of tooth decay; not the actual amount.
The aim, therefore, is to limit the constant snacking on sugary foods and drinks, as it is this constant exposure to the sugars that promotes the acid attacks on the tooth enamel and ultimately causes tooth decay.Constant sugar consumption also affects the saliva rate, reducing the chance of the saliva having a neutralizing effect on the acid and therefore assisting in reducing the likelihood of decay.
So swap those sugary drinks and sticky sugar yummies, and opt for a healthier diet for your child:
- Less soft drinks and juices
- More water and milk
- Lots of fresh fruit and vegetables
- Lots of dairy products, breads and grains
- Less lollies, cakes, chocolates, sticky starch-based foods
